The Little Stranger

June 19, 2018

OH MY GOSH I'M SO EXCITED RIGHT NOW.  Let me tell you why.  A few months ago, I shared a list of books I'd recommend to people who love "ghost stories."  Sometimes you just need a good-old-fashioned spooky book, ya know?  (Check out the full post here.) Well, I just found out one of those books is being made into a movie!!

I read the book "The Little Stranger" by Sarah Waters almost a year ago now.  I'm not going to lie - I almost didn't read the whole thing.  I was very bored at the beginning.  Thank goodness I stuck it out though, and ended up falling in love. It was such a page turner!

Set in the 1940's, "The Little Stranger" is the story of Dr. Faraday and his evolving relationship with a family of recluses, the Ayers.  The Ayers family live in a run-down mansion in the English countryside called Hundreds Hall. They call on Dr. Faraday for medical help at the beginning of the story, and he soon becomes a frequent visitor to the hall (one of the only visitors, actually.)  He begins to witness some strange and frightening incidents at Hundreds Hall, and it's unclear the cause. Mental illness? Something supernatural?   It's absolutely fascinating, and I couldn't put the book down.

Cut to this past Saturday - my dear husband is an avid watcher of movie trailers.  He saw a trailer for a movie he thought I might like, and sent it my way.  As soon as I saw the title, I started hyperventilating (I'm extremely over dramatic.)  It's the Little Stranger!! And it looks SO GOOD!! Check it out:

First of all, the casting looks fantastic.  You'll recognize Domhnall Gleeson from Harry Potter and Star Wars (and a million other things!)  Ruth Wilson is the perfect Caroline Ayres (and was in a version of Jane Eyre, another book I recommended in my ghost stories book post!)  The director, Lenny Abrahamson, directed the movie "Room," which you may have seen.

Second of all, based on the trailer it looks like they did an excellent job of capturing the essence of the book.  It was dark, gloomy, and very spooky.  I know I keep using the word spooky, but it's the best word to describe it.  It's not too scary, you just have this general feeling of unease the entire way through.   Something is not right, and you don't know why.  I totally get that from this trailer!

You may or may not know that I used to have a blog called "Never Judge a Book By It's Movie" where I compared books and their movie adaptations. I never made it far with that blog... I just didn't have the time to dedicate to it.  But this is the stuff I love!!

It looks like this movie will be coming out in August, so you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be going to the theater to see it! I'll let you know what i think!
