Sippin' on Gin and Goose(berries)

Ok, so I know it's the new year, and it's the time for resolutions such as eating healthier and drinking less (both of which are my resolutions for this year.) I also realize I've been posting a LOT of drink recipes on here lately....HOWEVER! This drink is too good not to share. I'll get to healthy recipes next week, I promise.

Yesterday my dear husband came with me on my weekly Market Basket trip. I usually assign him some groceries to find so he doesn't just have to follow me around the entire time. Yesterday I asked him to go grab us a variety of berries. Leave it to him to find the most obscure berry ever instead of the typical blueberry or strawberry! He came back to the cart with a big grin and a package full of gooseberries.

We had never tried gooseberries, but the package described them as "Tangy, Tropical, Sweet." We got home and immediately busted open the package to give them a try. They look like little orange tomatoes, but when you bite into them you get this burst of sweet and indeed very tropical flavor. There is a slight tomato-y aftertaste, but it's soooo good. I couldn't stop eating them.

Then, we had this crazy idea to muddle them up and make a cocktail with them! Once you muddle gooseberries, you can really see how similar they are to tomatoes - they are filled with little seeds too.

I'm a huge fan of Gin, and thought the flavor of these berries would really go well with it. After a little bit of taste testing and experimenting, here is what we came up with!

Gin and Goose(berry) Cocktail

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

2-3 Gooseberries

Ice

1.5 Fl Oz Gin

Lemon Lime Soda Water

1 Star Anise Pod

Directions:

1. Muddle 2-3 gooseberries at the bottom of a glass

2. Top with ice, then add one shot of gin

3. Add star anise pod, and top glass off with lemon lime soda water

4. Gently stir, then enjoy!

If you've never tried it, star anise has this licorice-like flavor that just goes so well with the gin and the tropical tang of the gooseberries. I know I said I'd be drinking less this year, but it's going to be hard now that I've found a drink this tasty! Hope you enjoy!!
