Two Hour Buffet Redo!
Happy (almost) Halloween everyone! It's my favorite time of year!! This year we are hosting a little get-together at our house, so I've been trying to finish up a lot of little things that I've been putting off for a while. I thought I'd share with you one of my favorite projects this month.
A while back, we took a trip to a local antique store and found this beauty. It matched our china cabinet in style, but not in color. But you guys, it was only $160 dollars!!! Whaaaaat? I know. SO we bought it. Once we got it in the dining room, we realized it looked terrible. The floors, table, china cabinet and buffet were all totally different stains. I think we've been ignoring the colors for almost 2 years now. It's time to do something!!
We have these gorgeous chairs in our dining room that we received as a wedding present form my parents, and were handmade by my cousin Drew. They are my favorite thing in the room. They have a matte black waxy finish that I love, and thought I'd try to replicate that on the buffet. Plus, it meant I could be lazy and avoid sanding down and staining the buffet :) Instead, I went to my local Ace Hardware and purchased a small can of Amy Howard One Step Paint in black!
Have you heard of this stuff? It's AMAZING. It's a chalk-based paint and requires almost no prep-work at all. I had used it before on a desk in my office, and I was really impressed. It also has that matte finish that I was looking for. They have a ton of other finishes and colors as well - you can check them out here:
Anyway, look at how gross the top was:
I had cleaned the buffet with a wood cleaner when we got it home, and uncovered these little speckles. I don't know what it is.
I cleaned off the buffet today with some simple green, and put some plastic underneath since I'm a huge slob. I tried to remove the hardware, but there was no way to get it off, so I had to leave it. Then, I got to painting! One coat later, I was done.
Isn't it lovely? Can you believe this entire project only took me two hours? TWO HOURS??? That includes going to the store.
The speckles are gone too! You can't even tell they were ever there! The buffet looks brand new, and really fits the room now.
