It's finally my favorite month of the year! Ahhhh!!!!! I'm obsessed with scary and spooky and creepy things all year round, and I feel like October is the one month of the year where it's actually kind of socially acceptable for me to talk about that stuff out loud :)
I've spent the entire year preparing for this month. I am a wealth of knowledge of all things scary. I've read all the books, watched all the shows and movies, and listened to all the podcasts. It's time for me to share all that "useless" knowledge!
Today, I'm going to list the top 5 podcasts you should listen to this October when you're in the mood for something creepy!!
By the way - the best way to listen to these podcasts? Turn off all the lights in your house, light some candles, grab a blanket and a friend/loved one/animal, and turn the podcast up nice and loud.
Today is a wonderful day! It's the birthday of BOTH my parents. Yep, they have the same birthday. Adorable, huh???
I am going out for dinner with them tonight in Newport, and I wanted to bring them a sweet little treat. I decided to make something my mom used to make us all the time when we were kids. She called them "giggle cookies," but you'll know them better as Snickerdoodles.
Why did we call them giggle cookies? Well, my mom always told us that they had a secret ingredient in them that makes you laugh. I still remember being a kid and trying to get out of my mom what the secret ingredient was, but she'd never tell! The crazy thing is - she wasn't lying! Somehow, these cookies always made my brother and I crack up as soon as we took a bite. We couldn't stop laughing the entire time we ate the giggle cookies.
In school, we had a day each week when one parent would bring in snacks to the entire class. I was so proud the day it was my mom's turn and she broug...
Ahhh, it's finally fall!!!!! I've been waiting for this day since summer started. It's finally time for my favorite weather, my favorite holiday, and all my favorite foods. And blankets! And books! And sleeping with the windows open!
One of the best parts of fall? The in-season vegetables! I know most people immediately go to pumpkin, and I like pumpkin too but it's not my favorite. My go-to fall and winter vegetable is butternut squash!
If I could, I would go to Newport, RI every single day to Mama Luisa and get their butternut squash ravioli. It's my number one most favorite thing to eat on this entire planet. Just thinking about it right now, I'm having a hard time not jumping in my car to go and get some.
Well, I can't go today. It's too far, and we are trying to cut back on eating out. I've also never successfully recreated that dish at home. It's something about the sauce! I just can't make it the same way.
One of my favorite parts of any trip, especially a Disney trip, is packing! I know I'm in the minority here :) I just love packing because it means the trip is right around the corner! Today, I'm going to share a list of what I pack for my Disney Trip, and I'll give you some tips on packing for Disney that I've found useful.
The weather is HOT 90% of the time, but in the winter months it's important to pack layers because the weather can really fluctuate. Always check the weather the week before your trip to make sure you have the right kind of layers packed!
This isn't a packing list for people traveling with kids or families, this is just what I, Jill Smith, a 20-something* lady packs in my suitcase. I always look at lists like this before I travel anywhere, so I thought I'd add my Disney packing expertise to the world wide web.
*(that's a lie, but let's pretend I'm still in my twenties)
I hope you love the products I recommend! Just so you know, My Ocean State of Mind may collect...
This is a great Sunday. It's a hot day, but I'm sitting here in my nice cool house sipping on a lil' glass of whiskey, basking in the wonderful thought that I don't have to work tomorrow! It's labor day! Woooohooooo!!!
The whiskey reminded me that I wanted to tell you all about this new thing we're trying out - it's called Flaviar. Maybe you've heard of it? It's a "club for explorers at heart." We call it a "whiskey club," but they have a lot more than just whiskey.
Flaviar is for those of us who want to try new and interesting liquors, and expand our knowledge.
Here's how it works:
First, you join Flaviar! Kind of like a beer-of-the-month club, you pay a fee to receive periodic shipments. In this case, though, you don't receive full bottles. It's $60 per quarter, but we paid in advance for the year which brought the cost down slightly to about $52 per quarter.
Happy Sunday everyone! It's a beautiful afternoon, and I'm so happy to be home on the couch with all the windows open just soaking up these last days of summer. Also, my cat keeps trying to hold my hand right now and it's adorable. He doesn't want me to pet him, he just wants to hold my hand. BFFs!
It's been a long and arduous journey, but truthfully not nearly as challenging as I thought it was going to be. The hardest part of the entire thing for me was living with the clutter and disarray that comes with any reno, and the lack of a kitchen to prepare meals in. We ordered a lot of takeout, and it's difficult to stay healthy when you do that.
In this post I'll share lots of before and after pictures, and try and answer some of the key questi...
I realize it's been a while since I've shared any recipes on my blog. The last recipe I posted was for my healthy pre-workout muffins. While they are a great way to energize your body for a workout and get you the nutrients you need, they aren't what I would call "delicious." They are functional! They serve a purpose. They aren't made for enjoyment.
With Labor Day quickly approaching, I thought I'd share one of my go-to recipes for summer cookouts. It's a healthier version of a pasta salad (it's not healthy... it's just healthier than normal) and it's DELICIOUS! This dish is made for pure enjoyment, not for function!
This is a super creamy pasta salad, similar to one you'd buy at your local grocery store, which is why I love it so much. The use of Greek Yogurt gives it that great texture, and also sneaks in a little added protein which is always a plus. The ingredients are simple, but the flavor is incredible.
I found this recipe on Pinterest years ago and it's...
I want to share the next installment in my Kitchen Renovation saga. So far I've posted about our kitchen before the reno, and I've told you all about how we prepped for this renovation. Today, I'll be talking about the renovation itself! There was a LOT to do, but our contractor predicted he could have it done in just over a month.
